Copy Books

In the days before computers, photocopiers or carbon paper, whenever you needed  copies of correspondence or legal documents, they had to be copied by hand. It was very important that the script be legible and, to that end, it was helpful that a common script was used.  The cover of this copy book describes the style taught within it as 'A Practical Civil Service Running Hand'.

We do not have any copy books that were used in the Bromley Common National School but, below is a page from a book used at the end of the 19th century at another school. (Can you see the spelling mistake?) Below are links to some more pages and the cover of the book.
