Oakley
Road
On earlier maps, it
was called Westerham Turnpike Road. Before
the enclosure of Bromley Common in 1821, it ran much closer to Oakley House,
pictured below, and it was only in later Victorian times that it was named after
the house. One end of the drive to the house leads on to Oakley Road; an attractive lodge marks the entrance
(see right).
Captain (later Admiral) William Cornwallis and Major Rohdes were among
the owners before it was sold to George Warde Norman in 1825. It is now houses a
masonic lodge.

Also in Oakley Road is the home of Richmel Compton, author of the Just William
books. One of her stories is set in the immediate area (published
in ‘Undaunted,
the Story of Bromley in the Second World War’ by Graham Reeves). See the link below for

In 1837, the first Bromley Common Infant School was opened in the
Parish Cottages in Oakley Road.
