Part of a
page in the Bromley Boys School log book, December 1868.
15 boys
received a jacket, 15 got shoes, there were 15 trousers, 15
waistcoats and 15 caps - a total of 105 prizes. At the bottom of the
page, the head teacher wrote,
"The merits of these boys were well
weighed: If a boy's name appeared in the "Black Book" he received a
much less prize or perhaps none at all. If a boy by irregularity has
failed to do well, he got less than he would otherwise have done.
Uniform good conduct is the first and weightiest consideration. Many
little praiseworthy fellows... have on this account received the
best articles."
